How long does it take to recover from the surgery? Is there any non-surgical treatment for NPH? Surgical implantation of a shunt is by far the most common treatment for NPH. Use of repeated spinal taps as an ongoing treatment is rare and controversial. Sadly, there is no pill to treat NPH. How can one be sure that they really need or will benefit from the surgery? Based on the diagnostic studies the physician will make recommendations. There will be detailed discussion regarding the surgery with all patients. If, after this discussion, any patient is unclear or uncomfortable about making the decision to move forward, it is suggested that they get a second opinion. All diagnostic tests and their results will be made available to other physicians upon the request of the patient. How can friends or family members find a physician for a loved one who lives outside of this area? The National Hydrocephalus Association in San Francisco, CA, has a detailed list based on zip codes to assist patients in finding a neuroscience group to diagnose and treat NPH. The association can be reached by calling What can one expect if one doesn't have the surgery and the NPH is left untreated? Although there are no scientific studies that have looked at this question, experienced neurosurgeons and neurologists suggest that the condition continues to progress at a relatively slow but constant pace. There does not seem to be any one precipitous event after which symptoms suddenly significantly worsen. However, there is some early informal evidence that suggests chances of recovery are better if surgery occurs within three years of the onset of symptoms. How can I get more information about treatment? Interested patients and families can request additional information by calling 706-721-7953. |
